Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) Secretary-General Prum Sopheak Mongkol said yesterday landmines have been cleared in a 687,706 square metre area where the dangerous legacy of the civil war lingered and is now finally free years after peace was achieved in late 1998.

“Before it was unsafe land, but now villagers can use it as they want, such as farming or building a house,” Sopheak Mongkol said of the area in Trapaing Thmar village, Khun Ream commune, Bantey Srei district, Siem Reap province.

Deminers cleared the area of 59 anti-personnel mines, four anti-tank mines and 99 UXOs, all of which have been destroyed, he said.

Sopheak Mongkol said a total of three million square metres remain to be cleared of landmines.

Banteay Srei district governor Khim Finan said he pledges to transform part of the cleared land to be a tourism destination.

“It can provide camping, forest trekking and mountaineering to generate more income for local people,” he said.

This year, CMAA plans to clear more than 116 square kilometres of landmines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW).
